In collaboration with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Conference of Illinois supports both Senate Bill 292 and House Resolution 817, which were recently filed in Congress. These two bills each create the federal Educational Choice for Children Act, a national tuition tax credit program that provides students opportunities for scholarships exclusively through individual or corporate philanthropy .
The Catholic Church teaches that parents are the first and primary teachers of their children and therefore have the right to select the best educational environment for their children. Whether that is in a public or nonpublic schools, parents know the needs of their children. This legislation would help families in all fifty states afford access to the school of their choice.
