The Catholic Conference of Illinois, on behalf of Cardinal Francis George, OMI and all the bishops of Illinois, calls upon the Illinois General Assembly to reject Senate Bill 1716, the civil unions legislation.
Statement on House Bill 5428, providing access to original birth certificates
House Bill 5428, which passed the Illinois House and is now before the Illinois Senate for consideration, would allow adult adopted persons to have greater access to obtaining a copy of their original birth certificates.
The Catholic Conference of Illinois is not in opposition to HB 5428, but we believe there are ramifications, both positive and negative (the latter primarily concerning confidentiality of birth parents in older cases) that lawmakers should contemplate when considering this legislation.
