Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York warned President Barack Obama that continued attacks on the federal Defense of Marriage Act will seriously threaten Church/State relations.
In a strongly worded letter sent to Obama this week, Dolan criticized the administration's move from a lack of defense of DOMA — which defines marriage as between one man and one woman — to questioning its constitutionality by likening it to racial discrimination.
As president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Dolan noted that both he and his predecessor Francis Cardinal George OMI of Chicago have previously alerted Obama of their growing concern toward the administration's change in attitude toward DOMA.
Francis Cardinal George plans on sending the letter to all priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
